Jean Wilson Brutus, a Haitian immigrant, died on Dec. 12, 2025, one day after being detained at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark. ICE reported his death as suspected natural causes, but his family is seeking transparency and an independent investigation as questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his death.

GARRISON BRYANT
Garrison Bryant, 33, died in Essex County custody on Feb. 22, 2022, after overdosing on fentanyl and oxycodone at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, then a county jail annex for prisoners with addiction and other problems. Bryant is survived by two sons and his mother, and his estate is suing the county corrections department and the companies that owned and operated Delaney Hall when he died.

DEREK WEST HARRIS
Derek West Harris, was arrested, then jailed in Delaney Hall, for not paying his traffic tickets. Two days later, the 51-year-old Newark barber was killed, strangled by an inmate who tried to rob him of a few dollars and some cigarettes.
